Judge seeks to stay on bench

COVINGTON, GA – Judge Cheveda D. McCamy is seeking to remain on the Alcovy Superior Court bench.

A veteran lawyer with more than 20 years of experience, Judge McCamy has served as Judge for Newton and Walton Counties since October 2020 when Governor Brian Kemp appointed her. She is the first African-American woman to serve on the Superior Court bench in the circuit.

Prior to becoming a judge, Judge McCamy worked in prosecution, criminal defense, personal injury, real estate, estate planning and family law. She served as an Assistant District Attorney in Fulton, DeKalb and Henry Counties, helping to make communities safer by prosecuting murderers, child molesters, drug traffickers and gang members. From 2017-2020, she served as Chief Assistant District Attorney in Henry County, where she supervised more than 40 employees.

Since taking over the judicial seat vacated by the passing of the Honorable Judge Horace J. Johnson Jr., Judge McCamy has worked to bring more technology to the courtroom and helped implement safety procedures to return to in-person jury trials during the pandemic.

When not in the courtroom, Judge McCamy volunteers with several local organizations, including serving as the President of the East Metro Chapter of the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers, President of the Horace J. Johnson Beyond the Bar Scholarship Foundation, a board member for the Newton County Boys and Girls Club, Newton Mentoring, Krimson Cornerstone Foundation, co-chair of the community service committee of NewRock Legal Society and as a member of the scholarship committee of the Kiwanis Club of Covington. She also is a member of the Covington/Newton Chamber of Commerce, Walton County Chamber of Commerce, 2021-2022 Leadership Walton Class, Springfield Baptist Church, and Bar Associations in the Newton and Walton Counties.

Born and raised in Covington, Judge McCamy currently resides in Newton County with her husband and two children.

She will appear on the ballot in November 2022.
